Technical specifications sheet. With the Sirens, performance and artist’s book

Protocol:

For reciter and feedback. Variable duration.

The reciter reads a text, in a neutral tone, without interruption. This text is read into a microphone placed in front of him or her and transmitted through loudspeakers. It is a loop. It describes the electroacoustic chain in which this speech is taken, from the microphone in which the reciter speaks, to the loudspeakers that play this recording in the room where the person is, as well as the public present. With each new turn of the loop, the text goes further into the detailed description of each component, but also of the institutional, economic, political and social context of the so-called performance. At the same time, and since the beginning of the reading, a feedback is broadcast. At first inaudible, its dynamics increase as the reading progresses, gradually altering its understanding until it overwhelms it. The performance ends when the reading is finished. The feedback stops simultaneously and without fade-out. All lighting is also cut at the same time, plunging the space into darkness.

Activation:

First activation on October 20, 2021 at the Casino de Montbenon by Les Sirènes with Vincent Barras as narrator, for the LUFF (Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival). The text of the performance is published on this occasion in the collection Rip off/on by Van Dieren.

Protocole :

Pour récitant·e et feedback. Durée variable.

Le ou la récitant·e lit un texte, d’un ton neutre, sans discontinuer. Ce texte est lu dans un microphone disposé devant lui ou elle et diffusé via des haut-parleurs. C’est une boucle. Il décrit la chaîne électroacoustique dans laquelle est pris ce discours, depuis le microphone dans lequel le ou la récitant·e parle, jusqu’aux haut-parleurs qui diffusent cette captation dans la pièce où la personne se trouve, ainsi que le public présent. À chaque nouveau tour de boucle, le texte entre davantage dans la description détaillée de chaque composant, mais aussi du contexte institutionnel, économique, politique et social de ladite performance. Parallèlement, et ce depuis le début de la lecture, un feedback est diffusé. D’abord inaudible, sa dynamique augmente à mesure que la lecture progresse, altérant peu à peu sa compréhension jusqu’à la submerger. La performance prend fin lorsque la lecture est terminée. Le feedback s’arrête simultanément et sans fade-out. Tout éclairage est également coupé au même moment, plongeant l’espace dans le noir.
