Public holiday. With Silent Entertainment
Part of the Micro Silence exhibition (Galerie des Grands Bains Douches de la Plaine, Marseille, France, from 6 to 29 July 2017). A recording of the exhibition space was made between 3 pm and 7 pm on 25 June, on a Sunday, the day the space is closed. The recording was then played at that same time slot on each day of the exhibition, on the mobile phones and computers of people who work in the space, proposing the unobtrusive listening of a day off on a working day.
Silent Entertainment is a project by Patrice Caillet, Adam David and Matthieu Saladin, who present the dissemination of silence for all types of events. The silences are designed and created in situ, according to sites’ specific conditions. This project was initiated following the publication of their disc, Sounds of Silence – an anthology bringing together some of the most intriguing pieces of silence in recording history. Although all these pieces are composed with the same, singular material, they couldn’t in fact be any more diverse in terms of their considerations, such that they characterise the specificity of silences conceived and created for a reproducible medium, playing on its materiality and laying it bare.

Activation dans le cadre de l’exposition Micro Silence (Galerie des Grands Bains Douches de la Plaine, Marseille, France, du 6 au 29/07/17) . Un enregistrement de l’espace d’exposition a été effectué le dimanche 25 juin, jour de fermeture de la galerie des Grands Bains Douches de la Plaine, entre 15h et 19h. Il est diffusé sur ce même créneau horaire chaque jour ouvrable de l’exposition, à partir des téléphones portables et ordinateurs des personnes qui travaillent dans l’espace, proposant l’écoute discrète d’un jour de repos sur un temps de travail.
Silent Entertainment est un projet de Patrice Caillet, Adam David et Matthieu Saladin, qui propose de diffuser du silence pour tous types d’événements. Les silences sont conçus et réalisés in situ, selon les conditions spécifiques de chaque contexte. Ce projet a été initié à la suite de leur disque Sounds of Silence(Alga Marghen, FRAC Franche-Comté et Incertain Sens, 2013) – anthologie réunissant certains des plus intrigants morceaux de silence de l’histoire de l’enregistrement. Si tous ces morceaux ont en commun un même et unique matériau, ils sont en réalité on ne peut plus divers dans leurs attentions, de même qu’ils rendent compte de la spécificité de silences pensés et produits pour un médium reproductible, jouant de sa matérialité en le mettant à nu.
