With Silent Entertainment.

In 1978, the British punk band Crass released their first EP, The Feeding of The Five Thousand. During its production in a factory, the workers refused to press the record because they disagreed with the « blasphemous » character of the first track « Asylum » which violently attacks religion. The band replaced this track with a one-minute piece of silence called « The Sound of Free Speech ».

The Sound of Free Speech (Extended Version) gives us the opportunity to hear this silent track, extended in such a way that its duration corresponds to that of the Silence! symposium, organized over two days, April 23 and 24, 2015, by the Art History & Communication Studies department of McGill University, in Montreal, Canada. The recording of this extended silence is played in parallel with the papers for the duration of the colloquium.

En 1978, le groupe de punk britannique Crass sort son premier EP, The Feeding of The Five Thousand. Lors de sa production en usine, les ouvriers refusent de presser le disque par désaccord avec le caractère « blasphématoire » du premier morceau « Asylum » qui attaque violemment la religion. Le groupe remplace alors ce titre par un morceau de silence, intitulé « The Sound of Free Speech » et d’une durée d’une minute.

The Sound of Free Speech (Extended Version) donne à entendre cette plage silencieuse, étendue de telle sorte que sa durée corresponde à celle du colloque Silence!, organisé sur deux jours, les 23 et 24 avril 2015, par le département Art History & Communication Studies de la McGill University, à Montréal, Canada.L’enregistrement de ce silence étendu est diffusé en parallèle des communications sur toute la durée du colloque.
